I had the pleasure of making a new mainsail for the schooner American Eagle of Rockland, Maine.
The schooner American Eagle and the sail loft have a relationship going back decades. Nat Wilson made many sails for her and this was the last sail I made while working for him. I was very happy to make her a new mainsail for Captain Tyler King.
We added a balance reef to this sail similar to the mizzen on the Victory Chimes so that the sail can be shortened down to a very small size and still be used. I look forward to continuing the friendship between this vessel and the sail loft.
This sail was made out of 16oz Oceanus, which Nat helped create in the 1990's with North Cloth. This is an amazing cloth because it acts much like cotton sail cloth. It is extremely strong but much lighter weight and doesn't absorb water like cotton cloth does. Oceanus sail can give twenty years of service and can be used on yachts, ships, and cruising boats!
